چکیده
Inhalation therapy involving a pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI) is one of the most commonly used and effective treatment methods for patients with asthma. The purpose this study was to develop computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model characterize aerosol flow issued from pMDI into simulated mouth–throat geometry. effects air rate cone angle were analyzed in detail. behaviour multiphase initiated at actuation nozzle extended through airway based on Eulerian-Lagrangian discrete phase model, k-? applied turbulency. We validated our against published experimental measurements cover hydrodynamic aspect study. recirculation we observed 90° bend inside resulted selective retention larger diameter particles, patterns correlated drug deposition behaviour. Enhancing rates up three times reduced aerodynamic particle diameters 20%. also that, as increased, mouth increased; an 8° best lowest deposition.

Computational analyses of a pressurized metered dose inhaler and a new drug-aerosol targeting methodology.
The popular pressurized metered dose inhaler (pMDI), especially for asthma treatment, has undergone various changes in terms of propellant use and valve design. Most significant are the choice of hydrofluoroalkane-134a (HFA-134a) as a new propellant (rather than chlorofluorocarbon, CFC), a smaller exit nozzle diameter and attachment of a spacer in order to reduce ultimately droplet size and spr...
متن کاملOptimizing aerosol delivery by pressurized metered-dose inhalers.
The modern era of aerosol therapy began with the introduction of the Medihaler Epi in 1956, after a 13-year-old asthmatic told her father, an officer in the Riker company, that asthma medications should be as convenient to use as hair spray and she complained that the bulb atomizer leaked in her school bag. Since then, advances in technology have made aerosol delivery much more efficient, so th...
متن کاملDelivery of propellant soluble drug from a metered dose inhaler.
The deposition of particulate suspensions delivered from a metered dose inhaler has been investigated extensively. The distribution of propellant, delivered from a metered dose inhaler, was studied by radiolabelling it with technetium-99m hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime. Andersen sampler measurements indicated that half of the dose was associated with particles in the size range 0.5-5 microns di...
متن کاملLung deposition of budesonide from a pressurized metered-dose inhaler attached to a spacer.
The absolute systemic availability and pulmonary deposition of budesonide inhaled from a pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI) attached to a Nebuhaler spacer was determined in 15 healthy subjects. The study was of an open cross-over design. Each subject randomly received three single doses of budesonide on separate days: 0.5 mg given intravenously and 1.0 mg (0.2 mg x 5) by inhalation from a ...
متن کاملSalbutamol delivery from a hydrofluoroalkane pressurized metered-dose inhaler in pediatric ventilator circuits: an in vitro study.
STUDY OBJECTIVES The aim of our study was to determine the in vitro delivery of salbutamol from a pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI) containing hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) propellant through various delivery devices to four models of a pediatric lung. DESIGN To determine the effect of electrostatic charge, delivery of salbutamol was initially assessed with a multistage liquid impinger (MSLI)...
